Tucked deep in the trans-Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh, it sits at an average altitude of 3,800 metres, cut off from the rest of India by snow for seven months of the year. When the roads open in June, Spiti emerges like a secret kept by the mountains.
The landscape is unlike anything else in India. Bone-dry and lunar, with rivers of impossible blue running through steep canyons of orange and grey rock.
