Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day
1
Shimla / Manali → Narkanda
Drive through apple orchards · Overnight Narkanda
Your journey into the high Himalaya begins. Departing from Shimla or Manali, the road climbs through dense deodar forests and kilometre upon kilometre of apple orchards — this is Himachal at its most lush. Narkanda (2,708m) is your overnight stop, a quiet hill town that marks the gateway to the Kinnaur and Spiti circuit. Rest well — the real altitude begins tomorrow.

Narkanda → Reckong Peo / Kalpa
Kinnaur Valley · Kinnaur Kailash views
Enter the fabled Kinnaur Valley, hugging the Sutlej River on roads carved into sheer cliff faces. The scenery shifts from green forests to dramatic desert gorges. At Kalpa (2,960m), you're face-to-face with the sacred Kinnaur Kailash peak — the views from your guesthouse terrace at sunset are among the most dramatic in all of Himachal Pradesh.

Kalpa → Nako → Tabo
Tabo Monastery (1,000 years old) · Cave monasteries
A day of ancient history and high-altitude drama. Pass the turquoise Nako Lake (3,662m), then descend into the Spiti River valley and arrive at Tabo — home to a monastery founded in 996 AD, one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries on earth. Explore the mud-brick prayer halls, ancient frescoes, and the cave dwellings carved into the hillside above the village. Overnight in Tabo.

Tabo → Dhankar → Kaza
Dhankar Monastery on cliff edge · Kaza market
Morning visit to Dhankar Monastery — perched impossibly on a crumbling spire of rock above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, it is one of the most dramatically situated buildings in the world. The views from the monastery walls are dizzying. Continue to Kaza (3,800m), the district headquarters and the heart of Spiti. Explore the local market, try Spitian cuisine, and acclimatise for the days ahead.

Kaza Local Sightseeing
Key Monastery · Kibber (4,200m) · Chicham Bridge
A day devoted to Kaza's finest. Key Monastery (Ki Gompa), the largest monastery in Spiti, commands a hilltop at 4,166m — its whitewashed walls terraced against a backdrop of barren mountains. Continue to Kibber village (4,200m), one of the highest motorable villages in the world, where stone houses and yaks coexist with satellite dishes. Cross the Chicham Bridge — Asia's highest suspension bridge — before returning to Kaza for a free afternoon to rest or explore.

Pin Valley
Pin Valley National Park · Mud village · Snow leopard territory
Drive into the Pin Valley, a starkly beautiful side valley where the Pin River runs glacier-cold and the mountains turn every shade of ochre and rust. Pin Valley National Park is one of India's last strongholds of the elusive snow leopard — your chances of a sighting are slim but not zero. Visit Mud village, the valley's main settlement, where flat-roofed stone houses cluster around an ancient monastery. Return to Kaza by evening.

Chandratal Lake
Drive to 4,300m · Lake circuit walk · Starry overnight
The crown jewel of the circuit. The drive to Chandratal (Moon Lake, 4,300m) crosses high-altitude plains where the road virtually disappears into the landscape. When the lake finally appears — a crescent of impossibly vivid turquoise surrounded by snow-dusted peaks — the silence hits you. Walk the lake circuit path as the light shifts through the afternoon. Overnight in a camp or basic guesthouse nearby: on clear nights, the Milky Way fills the entire sky above you.

Return to Manali
Via Rohtang · Drop at Manali bus stand / airport
The final leg crosses the Rohtang Pass (3,978m) — a dramatic threshold between the cold desert of Spiti and the green Kullu Valley below. The descent into Manali is a journey between worlds. Your driver drops you at the Manali bus stand or Bhuntar Airport, where you begin the journey back to the plains carrying memories that will take months to fully unpack.
