Asia's Most Underrated Destination

Sri Lanka is one of Asia's most underrated destinations and the closest foreign country to India — a 1.5-hour flight from Chennai, 2.5 hours from Mumbai. In a country the size of Tamil Nadu, you'll find UNESCO World Heritage rock fortresses, lush tea-covered hill country, the world's best elephant sightings outside Africa, and beaches that genuinely rival Bali and the Maldives.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress — a 5th-century palace built on top of a 200-metre volcanic rock — is one of Asia's most extraordinary archaeological sites. The Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy is the most sacred Buddhist site in the country. The scenic train journey from Kandy to Ella through tea plantations is the most beautiful rail journey in Asia. And the Dutch Fort at Galle is a UNESCO-listed colonial gem on the southern coast.

Sri Lanka is visa-free for Indians — apply online for the Electronic Travel Authorisation before departure at no cost. The country is compact, English is widely spoken, and the hospitality is some of the warmest in Asia. Tripharbr covers the full circuit — Colombo, the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, Ella, and Galle — in a seamlessly planned itinerary.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

Getting There & Visa
SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo, and Air India operate direct flights from Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. Chennai is closest at 1.5 hours.
Visa is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) applied online at eta.gov.lk before departure. Free for Indians.
A confirmed return ticket is required before applying for the ETA. Book flights before applying.
Getting Around Sri Lanka
The scenic train from Kandy to Ella is the must-do rail experience — book observation car seats well in advance as they sell out weeks ahead.
Tuk-tuks are cheap and ubiquitous — always agree on a price before getting in. App-based services like PickMe work well in Colombo.
We arrange all inter-city road transfers as part of your package — the fastest and most comfortable option.
Food for Indian Travelers
Sri Lankan food is close to South Indian — rice and curry, hoppers (like appam), string hoppers, and dhal are all familiar and delicious.
Vegetarians do very well in Sri Lanka. Most restaurants have extensive vegetarian menus.
Must try: kottu roti (chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables and egg), pol roti (coconut flatbread), and fresh king coconut water from roadside vendors.
