9 Days Ladakh Grand Tour — The Complete Circuit

Arrive at Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, one of the most dramatic landings in the world with mountain ridges on all sides. Our driver meets you at the gate and transfers you directly to your hotel. Day one is a mandatory acclimatisation rest day — Leh sits at 3,500m and altitude sickness is a very real risk if you push too hard too fast. Rest completely, drink several litres of water, avoid alcohol, and eat light meals. The mountains will be waiting.

Day two is a gentle acclimatisation day with light sightseeing at Leh's altitude. Start with a visit to Leh Palace, the 17th-century nine-storey royal fort that dominates the old town skyline. Climb to Shanti Stupa, a white-domed Buddhist stupa perched on a hilltop with a panoramic view of the Indus Valley and Stok Kangri range. Explore Leh Market for local handicrafts, pashmina wool, and dried Ladakhi apricots. Drive out to the famous Magnetic Hill optical illusion, and then to the Sangam where the turquoise Zanskar River merges with the grey Indus — a striking confluence of two great rivers with wildly different colours.

The day begins before sunrise. Ascend Khardung La at 5,359m — the highest motorable road in the world, crossing the Ladakh Range into the Nubra Valley. Stop at the pass for photographs, hot tea from the army canteen, and to catch your breath in the thin mountain air. The descent into Nubra reveals a cold desert landscape utterly unlike anything you have seen in the Himalayas. Visit Diskit Monastery, the oldest and largest in the Nubra Valley, perched dramatically on a cliff above the valley floor. Next to it stands a towering 32-metre Maitreya Buddha — seated, facing Pakistan, keeping watch over the valley. The evening stars at the Hunder sand dunes, where you board double-humped Bactrian camels for a sunset safari across a high-altitude desert. Overnight in Nubra Valley.

Today's route is one of the most scenic in Ladakh — the Shyok Valley road that winds alongside the Shyok River through a remote, barely-visited landscape of grey boulders, dramatic gorges, and distant snow peaks. This route bypasses the Khardung La return and takes you directly across to Pangong, saving time and revealing a very different side of Ladakh. Arrive at Pangong Tso in the afternoon. The lake stretches 134 kilometres across the Tibetan plateau, with 60% of its length in China. From the Indian bank, the water shifts between at least five shades of blue and green depending on the angle of the light — a phenomenon that makes every photograph look like it has been digitally enhanced. Check into your lakeside camp and settle in for sunset. Overnight at Pangong camp.

Wake before sunrise and walk to the lake's edge — the predawn silence and the colours that emerge over the eastern mountains as the first light hits the water are unlike anything else in India. After breakfast, drive along the southern bank towards the eastern section closer to the Line of Actual Control for a distant viewpoint of the area where the lake narrows. Return to camp in the afternoon. The rest of the day is yours: optional kayaking on the lake is available (extra cost), or simply sit by the water and watch the light change hour by hour. A second night at Pangong is something most Ladakh packages skip entirely — this tour gives you the luxury of the full experience. Overnight camp.

Today is a full-day drive through some of the most remote terrain in India. From Pangong, the route crosses the Mahe Bridge and heads south through the Changthang plateau — a high-altitude cold desert that is home to the nomadic Changpa people and their pashmina-producing Changthangi goats. The landscape is stark, immense, and almost entirely without people. Cross Tanglang La at 5,328m on the way down towards Sumdo before turning south towards Tso Moriri. Arriving at Tso Moriri in the evening is a quietly powerful experience — at 4,522m, this lake is even higher than Pangong and receives a fraction of the visitors. The water is a deep, vivid blue, ringed by mountains, and feels completely untouched. Overnight in a camp at Korzok village on the lake's edge.

A full day at one of the least-visited high-altitude lakes in India. Morning walk along the lakeshore — black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese are resident here, and the silence is absolute. Visit Korzok Monastery, one of the highest monasteries in the world, its colourful prayer flags a vivid contrast against the barren landscape. Walk through Korzok village and meet the nomadic Changpa yak herders who have lived at this altitude for generations. In the afternoon, drive to Puga geothermal field — a bizarre landscape of steaming sulphur vents, bubbling mud pools, and boiling springs at 4,400m, with a raw geological energy that feels like the edge of the earth. Overnight at Puga or Chumathang on the drive towards Leh.

The final driving day brings two of Ladakh's greatest monasteries. From Chumathang, follow the Indus River north through Upshi towards Leh. First stop: Thiksey Monastery, a spectacular 12th-century gompa that resembles Tibet's Potala Palace, rising in tiers up a hill above the Indus. Its assembly hall houses a 15-metre Maitreya Buddha that fills the two-storey space. Then continue a few kilometres east to Hemis Monastery, the richest and most famous monastery in Ladakh. Founded in 1672, Hemis is home to the legendary Hemis Tsechu festival (Jun–Jul) with its masked Cham dances and ancient thangka display. If you are travelling in June or July, the timing of this tour is deliberately designed to coincide with the festival. Return to Leh for a celebratory final dinner — eight nights in the world's highest cold desert plateau, three lakes, three great mountain passes, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Early morning airport transfer to Leh airport. Leh flights depart early due to mountain weather — typically 6–8 AM — so expect a 4 AM wake-up call. Our driver is punctual and ensures you arrive well ahead of check-in. As your plane climbs above the Ladakh Range, you get one final aerial view of the terrain you have just crossed on the ground — the brown plateaus, the blue lakes, the white passes, all spread below you like a map of somewhere impossibly beautiful.
