5 Days Ooty & Kodaikanal — Nilgiris Tea & Lakes

Transfer from Coimbatore airport (90 min) to Udhagamandalam — Ooty — the "Queen of Hill Stations." After hotel check-in, visit the sprawling Government Botanical Gardens (established 1848) with its fossil tree and Italian-style terraces, and the fragrant Rose Garden. Evening boating on Ooty Lake surrounded by eucalyptus trees.

The day begins with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — a UNESCO World Heritage steam-powered toy train that winds through 16 tunnels and across 31 viaducts from Ooty to Coonoor, clinging to the hillside through a sea of tea estates. In Coonoor, visit Sim's Park (botanical garden in a quiet valley), then a working tea estate with a guided tasting session. Sunset at Dolphin's Nose viewpoint overlooking Catherine Falls.

A beautiful four-hour drive through the Palani Hills takes you from the Nilgiris to Kodaikanal — the "Princess of Hill Stations" sitting 2,133m above sea level inside a volcanic crater. Check in, then head to the star-shaped Kodai Lake for pedal boating in the cool evening air. Walk through Bryant Park's 700 varieties of roses, then Coaker's Walk — a 1km cliff-edge promenade where the plains of Tamil Nadu appear 2,000m below you at sunset.

Early morning drive through the thick shola forest to Berijam Lake (forest permit included) — a pristine reservoir surrounded by dense forest where the only sounds are birds. Return for a walk through Kodaikanal's famous Pine Forest: tall silver oaks and pines create a quiet, cathedral-like atmosphere. Afternoon visit to the dramatic Pillar Rocks — three massive granite pillars standing 122m tall — and Silver Cascade waterfall. Evening: browse the local market for Kodai's famous homemade chocolate and eucalyptus oil.

Final morning walk to Fairy Falls — a gentle curtain of water through the forest. Load up on the local chocolates and homemade jams before your transfer to Madurai or Coimbatore airport. The hills will call you back.
