Fly into Guwahati — gateway to the Northeast. Your tour manager meets you and takes you directly to the hilltop Kamakhya Temple — one of India's most sacred Shakti temples, with sweeping Brahmaputra views. Ferry to tiny Umananda Island temple on the river. Sunset on the Brahmaputra ghats — the river is impossibly wide.

Drive 4 hours to Kaziranga National Park — the UNESCO World Heritage site that saved the Indian one-horned rhinoceros from extinction. Majuli River Island

Ferry from the north bank of the Brahmaputra to Majuli — the world's largest river island (875 sq km), home to the Vaishnavite Sattra monasteries that preserved Assamese culture through centuries. Cycle between the sattras on bamboo bicycles. Watch mask-making and Sattriya dance rehearsals. A day outside of time.

Drive north into Arunachal Pradesh · Bhalukpong · Forest checkpoint
Drive north from Majuli back to the mainland and begin the ascent into Arunachal Pradesh. Enter via Bhalukpong — the Inner Line Permit checkpoint. Drive through the stunning Kameng River valley, the landscape turning from plains to jungle to pine-clad hills. Overnight at Dirang — a charming valley town with a dzong and hot springs.

The journey over Sela Pass (13,700 feet) — snow-flanked in winter, wild flowers in summer, always dramatic. Sela Lake at the top: turquoise water at altitude, prayer flags, and yaks. Jung Falls cascading 100 feet in multiple streams. Arrive Tawang — the 400-year-old Buddhist monastery town at 10,000 feet, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.

Tawang Monastery — the largest Buddhist monastery in India and second largest in Asia, founded in 1681. The main hall's 28-foot golden Buddha is staggering. Drive to Bumla Pass (15,200 feet) on the India-China border — one of the highest motorable passes in the world. Shungatser Lake, also called Madhuri Lake after the filming of a Bollywood song there. Evening at the Tawang bazaar for local weaves and thangkas.

Descend from Tawang and drive south through Assam to Meghalaya. Arrive at Mawlynnong — Asia's cleanest village. Then the unmissable Dawki River: board a wooden boat on water so transparent it appears you're floating on air above the riverbed. Overnight in Shillong.
