Fly into Tribhuvan International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Thamel — Kathmandu's colourful backpacker-and-boutique district. Afternoon at Pashupatinath Temple — the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal, on the Bagmati River, with cremations, sadhus, and ancient tradition happening openly. Evening circumambulation of the great Boudhanath Stupa — 500 prayer wheels, 5,000 butter lamps, and the Buddha's eyes watching from above.

Full Kathmandu Valley day: Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) on its hilltop with city and Himalayan views. The medieval Kathmandu Durbar Square — living palace, temple courtyards, and the Kumari (Living Goddess) occasionally visible at her window. Ancient Patan Durbar Square's Newari craftsmanship. End at Bhaktapur — the most preserved medieval city in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fly or drive to Pokhara (25-min flight or 6-hr scenic drive). Check in to your lakeside hotel on Phewa Lake. Afternoon rowboat on the lake — the perfect reflection of Annapurna's snowfields in the still water, and the golden Tal Barahi Temple on its island. The journey's centrepiece: the Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang Palphug), clinging to a sheer cliff 900m above the Paro Valley floor. The 4-5 hour hike through pine forest and prayer flags leads to one of the world's most stunning buildings — built where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century. Descent for a traditional Bhutanese lunch. Evening Bhutanese culture show with folk dances and an archery demonstration.

Drive to Thimphu — Bhutan's tiny, traffic-light-free capital. The massive Buddha Dordenma statue (169 feet) overlooking the valley. Drive over the Dochu La pass (3,100m) with its 108 chortens and Himalayan panorama. Descend to Punakha — Bhutan's former capital — for the stunning Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers, the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. Walk Bhutan's longest suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu.
