Everything you need to plan a perfect Kashmir trip — from houseboat bookings to Gulmarg gondola tips, written by people who have been there hundreds of times.
Kashmir is India's most visually extraordinary destination. The combination of a Himalayan lake with houseboats and Mughal gardens, a high-altitude ski resort with Asia's highest gondola, and green meadow valleys with snow peaks creates a diversity no other Indian destination matches. It is the only place in India where you can have breakfast on a houseboat, ride Asia's highest cable car before lunch, and watch the sunset over a river valley in the afternoon. Add to this some of the country's best food, warmest hospitality, and most distinctive culture — and Kashmir earns its reputation as heaven on earth.
April–June (Spring and Summer): The most popular season. The Tulip Garden blooms in April — Asia's largest with 1.5 million flowers. May and June offer perfect weather (15–25°C), fully operational Gulmarg gondola, and lush green Pahalgam. Book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead.
September–October (Autumn): Our top recommendation. The chinar trees turn brilliant red and gold from late September. Clear skies after monsoon. Dal Lake reflections are at their most beautiful. October is Kashmir's finest month for photography.
December–February (Winter): Heavy snow at Gulmarg — excellent skiing. Very cold in Srinagar (below 0°C). Dal Lake occasionally freezes. For snow lovers only.
July–August (Monsoon): Avoid for standard tourism — occasional rain, leeches on trekking routes.
By Air: Fly to Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar. Direct flights from Delhi (1.5 hrs), Mumbai (2.5 hrs), Bengaluru (3 hrs), Chennai (3.5 hrs). IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, SpiceJet all operate routes. Book 6–8 weeks ahead — Kashmir flights sell out quickly in peak season.
By Road: The Jammu to Srinagar highway (NH-44) is 270km — approximately 8–10 hours. Scenic drive through the Banihal tunnel and Pir Panjal mountains. Can be affected by weather and traffic diversions.
By Train + Road: Overnight train from Delhi to Jammu (10–12 hours), then road to Srinagar (8–10 hours). Two-day journey but significantly cheaper than flying.
Dal Lake Houseboats (Srinagar): The unmissable Kashmir experience. Stay 1–2 nights minimum. Categories range from basic (Category C, ₹2,000–₹4,000/night) to luxury (Category A+, ₹15,000–₹35,000/night). Our recommendation: Category A at ₹8,000–₹15,000 per night — good food, clean AC rooms, beautiful lake location.
Srinagar Hotels: For additional nights beyond the houseboat. The Boulevard along Dal Lake has several good 3 and 4-star options. Heritage hotels in the old city offer atmospheric stays.
Gulmarg: Stay 1 night in Gulmarg itself for a sunrise mountain experience. Hotels range from budget ₹3,000 to luxury ₹20,000+ per night.
Pahalgam: 1–2 nights recommended. Good 3-star hotels along the Lidder River. Peaceful and beautiful.

Kashmiri cuisine is one of India's finest — rich, aromatic, and unique. Must eat:
Vegetarians: Kashmir has excellent vegetarian food — Dum Aloo, Nadru (lotus stem) dishes, and the extraordinary variety of Kashmiri bread and tea.

Yes — Kashmir is safe for tourists in 2026. The major tourist destinations (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg) have been operating normally with millions of visitors annually. The Indian Army and CRPF maintain a strong presence which provides additional security for tourists. Tourist areas are heavily monitored and welcoming. The fear around Kashmir is largely outdated. Millions of Indians visit every year without incident.
