The Manali-Leh Highway (from Himachal Pradesh): Opens late May or early June — depends on snowfall that year. Closes October or November.
The Srinagar-Leh Highway (from Kashmir): Opens April or May. Closes November or December. This is more reliable and opens earlier than Manali-Leh.
Leh Airport: Open year-round — flying to Leh is possible in all months.
January–February (Winter): Temperature: -20°C to -5°C. Extremely cold. Roads to Manali and Srinagar closed. Leh Airport open. The Chadar Trek — walking on the frozen Zanskar River — is done in January and is one of India's most extreme and beautiful experiences. Not suitable for standard tourism.
March–April (Late Winter): Temperature: -5°C to 10°C. Still cold. Srinagar-Leh highway may open in April. Manali-Leh still closed. Some tourist facilities opening in Leh city. Good for experienced travelers wanting a quiet Leh visit.
May (Season Opening): Temperature: 5°C to 18°C. Srinagar-Leh highway fully open. Manali-Leh may open late May. Pangong Lake accessible. Tourist season beginning. Good for those wanting fewer crowds and reasonable prices. Snow still visible on passes — spectacular.
June (Excellent): Temperature: 10°C to 25°C. Both highways open. All major attractions accessible. Weather excellent. Significantly fewer crowds than July–August. Hotel prices lower than peak. Our recommendation for travelers who want the full experience without the crowds.
July–August (Peak Season): Temperature: 15°C to 30°C. Peak tourist season. Best weather. Every road open. Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, Khardung La all accessible. Very crowded — book accommodation and vehicle 2–3 months ahead. Highest prices of the year.
September (Best Month — Our Top Pick): Temperature: 8°C to 22°C. Still warm during the day. Crowds reducing significantly from August peak. All roads still open. Pangong Lake still accessible. First hints of autumn. Clear skies for photography. Prices dropping. The single best month for a balanced Ladakh experience.
October (Late Season): Temperature: 0°C to 15°C. Getting cold. Some passes may close in late October. Nubra Valley and Pangong still accessible early October. Beautiful clear skies and golden light. Off-season prices. Last chance before winter.
November–December (Winter Closing): Temperature: -15°C to 5°C. Manali-Leh closes November. Srinagar-Leh closes later. Leh city accessible by air. Very cold, most tourist facilities closed.
Pangong Lake is accessible from May through October. The road from Leh to Pangong takes 4–5 hours and crosses Chang La pass (5,360m). It is one of the most dramatic drives in the world. The lake itself is at 4,350m. Peak photography months: September and early October when the light is extraordinary.
Nubra Valley is accessible from May through October via Khardung La (5,359m). The famous double-humped Bactrian camels are at Sam Sand Dunes in Nubra — accessible throughout the tourist season.
September — hands down. The weather is perfect, the roads are all open, the crowds are manageable after the August peak, prices have started to drop, and the landscape has the first hints of autumn colour. For a first-time Ladakh visitor, September delivers everything.
June and September are the two best months for most travelers. June for those who want clear skies and fewer crowds as the season begins. September for those who want the peak-season experience at off-peak prices. July and August if you want the busiest season with maximum facilities and don't mind the crowds. January for the extraordinary Chadar Trek if you can handle extreme cold.
