Backwaters, hill stations, beaches, and the famous monsoon — every month answered for Kerala.
January–February (Peak Season): Temperature: 20°C to 32°C. Dry, sunny, and perfect. The best beach weather of the year. Backwaters are calm and beautiful. Munnar is misty and green. Most popular months — book accommodation and houseboat 6–8 weeks ahead. Highest prices of the year.
March (Good): Temperature: 24°C to 34°C. Still dry and warm. Getting hot in the afternoons. Good for all activities. Slightly less crowded than January–February with somewhat lower prices.
April (Shoulder): Temperature: 28°C to 36°C. Hot and humid. Pre-monsoon. Vishu festival (Kerala New Year in April) — a wonderful cultural experience if you're there. Not ideal for beach travel due to heat.
May (Monsoon Arriving): Temperature: 28°C to 35°C. Southwest monsoon arrives in Kerala in late May or early June — Kerala is the first state in India to receive the monsoon. Dramatic skies and the first rains.
June–August (Monsoon): Temperature: 24°C to 30°C. Kerala's famous monsoon — heavy rain, extraordinarily lush green landscape, misty hills, swollen rivers, and dramatic waterfalls. Beaches are rough and unsafe for swimming. Backwaters are less pleasant. However, this is the best time for Ayurveda — the cool, moist air opens pores and makes treatments more effective. Many Ayurveda centers have their best therapists available in monsoon.
September (Transition): Temperature: 24°C to 32°C. Rains reducing. Onam festival falls in August–September — Kerala's most important festival with boat races, floral arrangements (pookalam), and the Onam Sadya feast. A wonderful time to visit for cultural experience.
October–November (Season Opens): Temperature: 22°C to 32°C. Rains clearing completely. Kerala is at its most beautiful — lush green from the monsoon, clear blue skies, full rivers, spectacular waterfalls. Less crowded than December–January peak. Our top recommendation for value and experience combined.
December (Peak Season): Temperature: 20°C to 30°C. Peak tourist season. Christmas and New Year in Fort Kochi is magical — colonial churches lit up, cultural performances, and a festive atmosphere unique in India. Book everything well in advance.
October through March — calm backwaters, pleasant temperatures, and clear skies for evening cruises. The houseboat experience is at its best when you can sit on the deck and watch the sunset without rain. Avoid June–August for houseboats.
October through May — the tea plantations are beautiful year-round but the mist and occasional rain of June–August can limit visibility. October and November are spectacular — the hills are intensely green from the monsoon, the air is crystal clear, and the waterfalls are full.
November through March — calm seas, perfect beach weather, safe swimming. Kovalam and Varkala are at their best during these months. Avoid June–September when the Arabian Sea is rough.
Onam typically falls in August–September (determined by the Malayalam calendar — varies each year). Kerala transforms during Onam — snake boat races on the backwaters (Vallam Kali), elaborate floral arrangements, traditional music and dance, and the Onam Sadya (a traditional feast of 26+ dishes served on a banana leaf). If you can time your Kerala visit to coincide with Onam, it is an extraordinary cultural experience.
October and November are our top recommendations for Kerala — post-monsoon freshness, lush green landscape, fewer crowds than December peak, and good prices. December through February for beach lovers and those who want the most comfortable weather. June–August for Ayurveda seekers who want the authentic monsoon treatment season. September for Onam festival and cultural experience.
