Every month answered — weather, what's open, what's crowded, and which travelers should go when.
January–February (Winter): Temperature: -5°C to 8°C. Heavy snowfall in Gulmarg and higher areas. Srinagar city gets moderate snow. Dal Lake occasionally freezes. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful — white mountains, frozen houseboats, empty streets. Not suitable for most tourists but extraordinary for winter lovers.
March (Early Spring): Temperature: 5°C to 15°C. Snow begins melting. First signs of spring. The Mughal Gardens start opening. Almond trees blossom in late February/early March — a beautiful but overlooked season. Good for budget travelers wanting fewer crowds.
April–May (Spring — Best Season): Temperature: 12°C to 22°C. Kashmir's most famous season. The Tulip Garden in Srinagar blooms in April — Asia's largest tulip garden with over 1.5 million flowers across 30+ varieties. Mustard fields are yellow. Gardens are full. Weather is perfect. Gulmarg gondola is fully operational. Most popular months — book accommodation early.
June (Early Summer): Temperature: 18°C to 28°C. Still pleasant. School holiday season begins — family travel peaks. Sonamarg is at its most beautiful. Slightly more crowded and expensive than April–May.
July–August (Monsoon): Temperature: 20°C to 30°C. Kashmir receives less monsoon rain than the rest of India but July–August brings clouds, occasional rain, and leeches on trekking routes. Pahalgam and Sonamarg are lush green. Not recommended for standard sightseeing tourism.
September–October (Autumn — Best Season): Temperature: 10°C to 22°C. Kashmir's most spectacular season for photography. The chinar trees — Kashmir's iconic plane trees — turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold from late September. Shalimar and Nishat gardens are extraordinarily beautiful. Clear skies after monsoon. October is our top recommendation.
November (Late Autumn): Temperature: 2°C to 12°C. Getting cold. First light snow possible at higher elevations. Chinar leaves falling — still beautiful. Off-season pricing and very few crowds. Good for budget travelers.
December (Early Winter): Temperature: -2°C to 6°C. Winter sets in. Gulmarg starts getting deep snow — ideal for skiing. Srinagar is cold and quiet. Christmas and New Year in a snowy Kashmir is magical for those who can handle the cold.
November and March are the shoulder months with the lowest prices — hotel rates drop 30–40% from peak season. The weather is still manageable and the landscape has its own charm. July and August are off-season with the lowest prices but also the least pleasant weather.
May, June, and October are peak season — high prices, busy houseboats, and Gulmarg gondola queues. Book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead for May–June and 4–6 weeks ahead for October.
October is our top pick for honeymoon couples — the autumn colours, the clear lake reflections, the cool evenings, and the dramatic landscape are at their most romantic. April is second — the tulips and spring blossoms create a beautiful setting. Avoid July–August for honeymoons.
May and June — school summer holidays coincide perfectly with Kashmir's best weather. The Gulmarg gondola is fully operational. Pahalgam's meadows are green and perfect for children. Book well ahead as May–June is the busiest family travel season.
April, May, September, and October are the four best months for Kashmir. April for tulips and spring. May for summer weather and family travel. September for post-monsoon freshness. October for autumn colours — our personal favourite. December–February for snow lovers willing to handle cold. Avoid July–August unless the lush green monsoon landscape is specifically what you want.
